During the final two and a half weeks of
camp, myself and three other nursing students were switched from sports
activities to teaching. I was excited to
help teach these students some ways to keep themselves healthy. We made PowerPoint’s to go with each lecture
but they were very short. We were told
ahead of time to keep them brief because the students would lose interest
quickly. Also, we planned 2 to 3
different games for the younger kids pertaining to the lecture. This was the best way to keep their
attention. They seemed to really enjoy
themselves while learning.
Discipline was extremely difficult. We formed a fun relationship with them during
sports so it was hard for the students to understand where we were coming from
when we had to be strict. During the
first lecture we laid down the ground rules stating that their eyes had to be
on the speaker, no food, no personal belongings at their seats, ect. This was
so the kids did not get distracted by other things. As we did in the weight room, the students
were given one or two warnings depending on what they were doing and once they
pushed us so far one of us would take them out of the classroom and talk to
them. That generally worked. We only had a few instances where the child
had to go to the office of the camp. Overall though the children were well behaved
and my group worked extremely well together. Teaching was an enjoyable
experience.
