Junior Eddie Locci's summer sojourne to the Domnican Republic

Although Eduardo "Eddie" Locci one day plans to take to the skies as a flight nurse and care for trauma patients, this summer he spent two unforgettable weeks as a volunteer nurse/medical assistant for a clinic called A Mother’s Wish in the Dominican Republic town of Los Pajones, which is a 30-minute drive from Santiago.

Locci spent much of his time either at the clinic, where he welcomed patients and performed routine vital signs and check ups, or accompanying a nurse throughout the countryside to deliver health care services to various towns and villages.

FPB’s service learning culminates in the senior year with the 10-week Senior Capstone project, where students have an intensive experience in community-based health care with vulnerable populations such as Native Americans, migrant workers, the Australian aboriginal community, and the urban poor.

The experience provides senior BSN students with the opportunity to analyze and apply concepts in health and health care, health policy and finance, culture, epidemiology, interventions, ethics, and more.
